Artist’s Statement

My art has often taken the form of site-responsive installations and has a strong leaning toward the conceptual, the quasi-functional and the whimsical.

The piece in this show, entitled “HEIR PLANES” was a collaboration with Chris Daubert for a themed group exhibit at b. sakata garo in Sacramento, California. January 2015. The title of the show was “Airplane Show.” Our piece took some liberties with the assigned concept and was created from a collection of carpenter’s planes, all of which we had either inherited ourselves, or planned to bequeath to others.

About the Artist

Tony May, Emeritus Professor of Art, taught at San Jose State University from 1967 until 2005. He was born in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, in 1942 and received his MFA degree from the UW-Madison in 1966.

His art has been shown widely in California including shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Art Institute, 80 Langton Street, Capp Street Project, San Jose Museum of Art, and the deSaisset Museum. A 40+year retrospective of his work entitled, Tony May/Old Technology was installed at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art in 2010. He has also exhibited in other parts of the United States, England, France, Japan and Thailand.
