Artist’s Statement
Victoria May uses fabric and stitching as the basis for mixed-media objects and installation that address the tenderness and absurdity in the human condition. Thrift store items or industrial surplus are frequently re-purposed as a commentary on resourcefulness in the context of current excesses. May’s carefully crafted objects often infer a sense of history or actual usefulness. The labor involved in mimicking effects ranging from decay to industry reflects the human duality of intention and futility. Her frequently obsessive interventions, sometimes veiled as readymades, underscore the absurdity in the societal tropes that are the object of her satire and contemplation.
