Artist’s Statement

Lesley Louden’s photographs capture an individual’s story and often a sense of place. Combining documentary practices with her fine art background, Lesley creates gallery installations and multimedia pieces to demonstrate that in every place, legendary struggles and meaning can elevate a story from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

About the Artist

Louden’s work has been featured in exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Art, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, the World Affairs Council in San Francisco, the Soros Foundation Moving Walls 15 Documentary Photography Exhibition in NYC and Washington, DC, and in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.

Louden’s documentary video and photographic projects for social change include collaborations with filmmaker Anne Evans on projects for the Colombian environmental agency CORALINA, for BUILD, a real-world entrepreneurial program for at-risk teens in the SF Bay area, and initiatives for the African Library Project in Botswana and Lesotho in Sub-Saharan Africa.

She received her BFA in photography from Ohio Wesleyan University, her MA in photo-media from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and her MFA in photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Lesley teaches photography at the college level and lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.
